Cookie-Baking Soccer Centauri (locked to [info]rogersmith_bigo)
Chocolate chip cookies- that seems like a good place to start. The recipe is simple, and the result is something many Humans enjoy. At least, that's been Vir's experience.

The ingredients arranged, Vir waits for Roger to arrive.

*Roger arrives a little late, carrying something behind his back.*

Sorry about that. I figured I'd get you a little "Glad you're back" present.

*He gives Vir some teas from various worlds.*

And how is Miss Karen?

Oh, you didn't have to... but thank you. Thank you.

Vir takes Roger's gift and sets it aside.

Karen is... is wonderful. She had to go home for another visit, but... but she seemed to enjoy herself at the estate. At least, I hope she did.

Oh, I'm sure she did, if for no other reason than the company.

Vir blushes at the compliment and looks away.

Well... I-I guess we should start.

Okay... well.

Vir walks over to the kitchenette and beckons Roger to follow.

Basic cooking, you see, is really just a matter of following directions. This is the recipe for chocolate chip cookies here, which, I think, is pretty easy to follow.

He points to the appropriate page in a book lying open on the counter.

It tells you just how much of everything you need and... and how to mix it together. I-I suppose you can start by mixing all the dry ingredients- you know, things like flour and sugar- in this bowl.

He hands Roger a large, steel mixing bowl.

And, um, you use these cups to measure.

He gestures to the measuring cups.

*Roger looks at the book, looks at the ingredients and looks at the cups.*

What's 1 tsp?

Oh, I-I'm sorry.

Vir blushes again.

One tsp is one of these.

He reaches across the counter and grabs a ring of spoons of various sizes. Holding up the appropriate measurement, he hands it to Roger.

The measurement each cup or spoon represents is written on the bottom... which is... well, pretty convenient.

Ruefully:

I suppose you can tell I don't have a lot of experience teaching.

I don't know. You probably have a lot more experience than I do. I haven't been around too many children for a while now.

I haven't been asked to teach the children how to cook, but... but I suppose you're right. Still, it's a little different with children. Not different in a bad way... but different all the same.

[info]rogersmith_bigo

True. But teaching children also brings patience, which is sometimes more necessary when dealing with an adult who may be too stubborn to learn.

I think you may be right about that.

However, I'll cheerfully say I'm not one of those. I'm willing to learn.

*He starts picking up ingredients, measuring them, then tossing them into the bowl.*

What is a tsp anyway? *He says "tsp" like it's a word.*

That's okay. Imagine what it must've been like for me when I first started with Human Standard recipe books!

[info]rogersmith_bigo

*Roger laughs.* It must have looked like a code book to you. I'm sure most diplomatic circles aren't used to handing out recipes translated into various languages with a code for measurements. The ingredients alone would probably make someone want to throw it back.

Well, I wanted to be able to entertain Human guests, so... so I did the research and asked around.

Vir pauses, cocking his head in thought.

I know it's easy for some of them to forget, sometimes, because I speak Standard so fluently, but... to be honest, the Humans themselves are something of a code book for me.

Well, mostly, it's the colloquialisms- you know, the references they make to their history and culture. Also, there are some customs that don't seem to make sense. Like... well, for one thing, what could be the significance of taking one day a year to roll cheese down a great hill?

It could very well be. Remember I come from one city from a very abandoned Earth. It sounds like it should be a child's game. Maybe it's for some special celebration for children?

Well, we have a specific children's day back at home. The kids get some little presents and they play all kinds of games - hide and sick, kick the can, stickball. They make cake and cookies for the kids. On Heaven's Day kids get lots of presents.
